December 21, 2000ANALYSIS-Germany's emission reduction targets seen ambitious Germany's goal of a 25 percent cut in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2005 is under fire from both the energy industry and environmentalists who argue it is too ambitious under existing legislation.
Germany is one of just three countries to have cut CO2 emissions since 1990, alongside the UK and Luxemburg, and its current target is beyond its Kyoto Protocol commitment of 21 percent for all greenhouse gases by 2008-12.
The power industry wants the government to do more to encourage emissions trading and to extend gas tax breaks for running "greener" fuels. Environmentalists have a wish-list including a green transport strategy and a tripling of investment in heating schemes.
