November 29, 2000U.S. ethanol production at record high in October
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) said ethanol production in the United States rose to a monthly record of 111,000 barrels a day on average in October, above the prior record of 110,000 barrels in April.
The RFA said in a statement that annual production for 2000 is now projected to over 1.6 billion gallons of ethanol, which would be another record.
RFA president Eric Vaughn said ethanol production was being boosted by high fuel prices due to oil production cuts by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, tight U.S. oil refining capacity, a ban in California on the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a possible carcinogen, and ample raw material from a record U.S. corn crop.
"Given persistently low commodity prices and consistently high crude oil costs, increased ethanol production remains the bright spot for farmers and consumers," Vaughan said.
