DOE Ethanol Workshop Series

==============================================
Ethanol Workshop Series News - January 2001
A Newsletter about the DOE/RBEP Ethanol Workshop Series (EWS) activities

==============================================

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)/Regional Biomass Energy Program (RBEP) Ethanol Workshop Series (EWS), sponsored by the DOE Office of Fuels Development (OFD) has completed a second successful year. A third year is now in the works, offering another six states the opportunity to participate in a grassroots program to inspire interest in ethanol production from a variety of biomass materials.

The Ethanol Workshop Series (EWS) began in 1999 with workshops in Alabama, Alaska, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Another nine states were added in 2000: Colorado, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Oregon/Washington, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas. The six new states participating in the 2001 EWS include Idaho, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Utah.

The EWS has become a very effective and successful program. While the objective is to prepare the pathway to a biomass ethanol industry, it is fully recognized that partnering with grain ethanol is necessary as well as concurrently developing the marketplace. Each workshop focuses on the issues and opportunities in the individual state, rather than a larger region. Each state is very unique unto itself.

The Ethanol Workshop Series program will receive national recognition in February. Building a state ethanol program is the topic for a special session at the National Ethanol Conference: Policy & Marketing. Wes Miller from Mississippi, Jody Pollok from Michigan and Joe Tregoning from Wisconsin will talk about their programs, tactics and successes.

This newsletter, the EWS News, serves as a tool to keep state planning committee members and nationwide supporters abreast of activities occurring in participating EWS states. Originally this issue of the EWS News was going to provide an update on all 18 states, however, there is simply too much news, so more will be provided in subsequent issues. Comprehensive reviews on EWS programs such as the workshop agendas, summaries, follow-up activities and other state initiatives, proposed plants and studies are posted at www.bbiethanol.com (click on DOE Workshops) and, individually, on many state bioenergy websites. The 1999 and 2000 EWS summaries are posted in entirety on the Western Regional Biomass Program site, www.westbioenergy.org.
