Event Details

Renewable Diesel Workshops:

Washington - Oregon Renewable Diesel Workshop
Greening Ahead of the Curve: Meeting the Challenge with Renewable Diesel Fuels

September 27, 2001
8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

DoubleTree Hotel - Seattle Airport
18740 Pacific Highway South
Seattle, Washington

Goals & Objectives:

  • NREL Goals: ..."to educate key public officials and the general public about biodiesel as a transportation fuel" and ..."to build state and local coalitions that would form the nuclei of a support group that would promote and eventually lead to local biodiesel production and use."
  • Washington/Oregon Planning Committee Desired Goals (recorded during initial planning meeting):
    • To address the use of cleaner fuels (mobile and stationary engines) in Washington and Oregon
    • To address emissions and air quality issues for the region
    • To inform public officials and the public in general

Summary

Over 100 people, mainly fleet managers, participated in the Washington-Oregon Renewable Diesel Workshop September 27th. Eighteen speakers presented subjects ranging from the basics of renewable diesel fuels to emissions and environmental impacts, production, avenues to market, to success stories by current users.

Kim Lyons, from Washington State University and lead person on the organizing committee, had the following evaluation of the workshop: “Overall workshop went very well and I believe covered most of the areas folks were interested in.” “However, I think a stronger focus on what folks are doing to push the market would have made it even better.”

Recommendations / Follow-up Activities

Nohemi Zerbi, DOE Renewable Diesel Program Manager recorded the following from the final wrap-up session of the workshop:

  1. Continue the regional dialogue
  2. Regional discussion/registry for emission credit and trading
  3. Keep group in contact with each other by e-mail and contact information
  4. Massive public relations campaign -public education, lobbying, information transfer
  5. Concentrated local effort to promulgate public information (creation of a task force the responsibility of local Clean Cities program)
  6. Score board of conversions (fleets going green)
  7. Government support
  8. "Americans for Fuel Security"
  9. Summary of workshop news release.

About the Programs

Renewable Diesel Workshops:
NREL Goals: ..."to educate key public officials and the general public about biodiesel as a transportation fuel" and ..."to build state and local coalitions that would form the nuclei of a support group that would promote and eventually lead to local biodiesel production and use."

Ethanol Producers' Technical Workshops:
Perspectives from ethanol producers, production technology providers, and government researchers. Those in attendance were given the task of exploring the challenges and opportunities presented by combining cellulosic ethanol streams with existing grain streams.

US DOE Ethanol Workshop Series:
A series of one-day, state-level workshops to educate key public officials and the general public about ethanol as a transportation fuel.
