North Carolina - June 4
A Strong Legislative Involvement

"Ethanol Driving North Carolina' Energy, Economic and Environmental Future"

During the first part of the morning at the North Carolina Workshop the stage will be set for the day by providing an overview of ethanol. Then getting more state specific, at 11:00 am, some of the state's options for feedstocks for ethanol will be discussed. One feedstock under development is an industrial sweet potato that grows well on tobacco ground. Although hog waste isn't unique to North Carolina, it is the state where research is currently underway to process the waste into methane that then will make ethanol. Grain and cellulosic feedstocks will also be reviewed. Governor Michael F. Easley, a recent new member of the Governors' Ethanol Coalition, has been invited to speak. Following lunch, state agencies that will have a role in the development of a state ethanol industry will share their perspectives, activities and potential involvement. A representative from Minnesota will then explain the Minnesota model. While Minnesota is a very different state from North Carolina, it's felt that knowing what their thought process was and how they proceeded will help identify and bring to the surface what may need to be done in North Carolina as well. At 3:00, a panel of legislators, who have been listening and learning, will relate their thoughts and ideas. The question "Where Do We Go from Here?" will be the closing round of discussion and will be followed with a reception for participants.
