LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — The Conoy Township Planning Commission will decide next month whether to recommend approval of a proposal to rezone 65 acres of farmland for an ethanol plant.
Penn-Mar Ethanol of York wants the township to change the zoning on 65 acres of farmland south of the county incinerator from agricultural to industrial use to allow an $80 million ethanol plant to be built.
More than 30 residents attended a meeting Thursday on the proposal, and several voiced concerns about possible odor and safety hazards. Some spoke in favor of the project, saying it might increase demand for local corn and send prices up.
Project manager Scott Welsh said Penn-Mar plans to buy up to a third of its corn from local sources and import the rest from the Midwest. Ethanol is produced by fermenting and distilling corn.
Township supervisors plan to go forward with a public hearing on the issue Thursday even though the commission held off on a recommendation. If approved, the plant would face another conditional-use hearing before construction could begin.
