December 22, 2003Values Fund assists ethanol facilities By TODD DORMAN, Courier Des Moines Bureau
DES MOINES --- Ethanol production facility projects near Mason City and Iowa Falls, and an organic oil processor in Cherokee County, received state financial assistance on Thursday.
Golden Grain Energy and Midwest Renewables each received $400,000 in loans from a pool of state dollars set aside for value-added agriculture ventures. Golden Grain is constructing a $55 million ethanol plant near Mason City. Midwest Renewables' $63.5 million plant will be built in the Iowa Falls area.
BIOwa Nutraceuticals also was awarded loans totaling $250,000 for a possible oil processing project in Cherokee.
The loans were approved Thursday by the Iowa Values Fund Board.
Golden Grain is a producer-owned cooperative. Its plant is expected to grind 15 million bushels of corn annually to produce 40 million gallons of denatured ethanol. State officials say the plant's appetite for grain should raise the price of corn roughly a nickel per-bushel within a 30-mile radius of the plant, which will also employ 32 people.
Midwest Renewables' plant, which will use roughly the same amount of corn and produce the same amount of ethanol, should have a similar economic impact, state officials said. The Iowa Falls plant will have 33 employees.
BIOwa Nutraceuticals is a potential joint venture between American Natural Soy Processors, which operates an oilseed refinery in Cherokee, and California-based Spectrum Organic Food Products. Spectrum is a leading maker of organic culinary oils and condiments.
