September 4, 2003Approval in New Zealand for the use of ethanol petrol blends New Zealand motorists could soon be filling their cars with ethanol manufactured as a by-product of the dairy industry.
Our reporter, Therese Rockley-Hogan, says final approval for the use of 10 per cent petrol/ethanol blends has just been handed down.
The decision is being welcomed as a big win for both New Zealand's agricultural sector and the environment.
Transport advisor for the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority, Elizabeth Yeaman, says unlike Australia there have been no negatives over the damage ethanol petrol blends could cause to vehicle engines,
Lobby groups say the New Zealand decision is more evidence that Australia is being left behind in the use of altenative fuels, which are manufactured in Australia from grain and sugar cane.
Bob Gordon from Biofuels Australia says until the fuel companies stop their "no ethanol" campaign the country can't follow in New Zealand's footsteps.
"Why shouldn't we be working with the oil companies to make petrol and diesel fuels safer for the health of Australian families," he said.
