August 26, 2003U.S. Ethanol Production Continued Strong in July USAgNet Editors - 08/26/2003
U.S. ethanol production set a record for the month of July at 178,000 barrels per day (bpd), up 39 percent compared to the 128,000 bpd produced in July 2002, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) said last week.
The RFA said U.S. ethanol production is forecast to rise to more than 2.7 billion gallons in 2003, up from a record production of 2.13 billion gallons in 2002.
Currently, 73 ethanol plants are operating have the capacity to produce 2.9 billion gallons annually. Thirteen additional plants are under construction.
Ethanol, mostly made from corn, is used as an additive to help gasoline burn cleaner. Congress is currently mulling energy bills that include an ethanol mandate to triple the amount of ethanol used in the nation's gasoline supply.
