August 12, 2003$800m ethanol plan moves ahead The Shire of Roebourne, in north-west Western Australia, has welcomed news that plans for an $800 million ethanol plant on the Burrup Peninsula have cleared an important hurdle.
The board of Canadian company Methanex has granted conditional approval for the construction of the plant to begin in October.
The plant will produce 1.3 million tonnes of methanol for export and is now dependent on $85 million of infrastructure support from the Federal Government.
Shire president Kevin Richards says Methanex has kept the shire well informed of its plans.
"They've gone along a lot with us on that and what will be the benefits and all that that comes to us, and it's good to get this secondary sort of industry on the Burrup because they will employ a lot of very local people in the final plant," he said.
