Farmers put hopes in ethanol plant

By Theresa Katalinas

WEST DEPTFORD TWP. -- Third-generation farmer Dennis Bitters is always looking for a new outlet for his 2,200 acres of grain crops.

Bitters, of Cumberland County, said he has no trouble unloading the bushels of corn from his family's 100-year-old farm. However, dwindling and unstable returns have made life more difficult and profits smaller with each new crop.

"It hasn't made me consider getting out of it, but it sure has made it hard," Bitters said. "There's always a market for corn ... but it's a depressed market."

Bitters brightened at the prospect of a $60 million ethanol plant now proposed for the 292-acre former Huntsman industrial site on Mantua Grove Road in West Deptford Township.

"That would be a great thing," Bitters said of the potential operation, which is expected to use 14.2 million bushels of corn per year in the ethanol-making process to boost corn prices for farmers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. "If we could get an additional 30 cents per bushel, that would help the farm economy, that's for sure."
