July 30, 2003METRO BRIEFING: ST. PAUL: Ethanol plant fire blamed on equipment A fire Friday night in the roof and ceiling of the Gopher State Ethanol plant in St. Paul was caused by accidental overheating of plant equipment, St. Paul fire officials said Monday.
Odor-reduction equipment known as a thermal oxidizer overheated and caused a fire in the insulation of the roofing and ceiling material. Damage was estimated at about $10,000.
One firefighter was taken to Regions Hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties but was not admitted.
It was the fourth fire at the controversial West Seventh Street plant since it opened three years ago in an unsuccessful effort to support Minnesota Brewing's beer-making operations.
Neighbors have complained of odors and noise from the plant, and the city of St. Paul filed suit to declare the facility a nuisance. A trial was held in May, and a decision is expected within about three weeks.
One of the previous fires also started when the thermal oxidizer overheated. The other two were in the plant's grain dryer.
