The booming U.S. ethanol market will consume an estimated 1.125 billion bushels of corn in 2003/04, up 18 percent from the previous year, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Tuesday. Ethanol is distilled from corn and, more and more, used as an additive for cleaner-burning motor fuels. "Corn used to make fuel ethanol is the fastest growing sector of the industrial uses" for corn, the USDA's Economic Research Service said in its monthly feed grains outlook report. "Production in May was 35 percent higher than a year earlier." In the past, ethanol production slowed in late spring but this year more of the fuel is being blended for summer driving, the USDA said.
