July 8, 2003Burger king's used oil makes clean-burning biodiesel WILLIAMS - The exhaust from Williams resident Kit Doyle's pickup smells more like potato chips than petroleum.
Doyle spends much of his time converting and recycling vegetable oil from restaurants like Burger King, into clean-burning petroleum-free biodiesel fuel.
Doyle sells a mixture of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent diesel to cement companies, heavy equipment operators and others who use it for off-road activities.
He makes a 90-cent profit on every gallon.
The alternative fuel, made by chemically separating glycerin from fat or vegetable oil, is cheaper and burns much cleaner than diesel.
And because it doesn't break down as easily as regular diesel, it cleans the fuel pump and injector of Doyle's truck. Eventually, he hopes to set up a pump station and a 100-gallon tank nearby. Locations in Eugene, Portland and Medford also sell biodiesel.
