April 24, 2003Edwards gives boost to ethanol From Staff Reports
In a move to bolster his environmental credentials, U.S. Sen. John Edwards on Tuesday proposed spending $500 million to ramp up the conversion of agricultural byproducts into the alternative fuel ethanol.
The North Carolina Democrat shared the idea during an Earth Day celebration at the University of California at Los Angeles in the midst of a presidential campaign swing.
Corn-based ethanol, a product popular in Iowa, the first presidential caucus state, is widely considered the most successful source of renewable energy.
Edwards' proposal would attempt to expand the use of biomass ethanol, which can be generated from several agricultural waste products, including corn stalks, rice straw and wood chips.
On Tuesday, Edwards also had an opinion piece published in The Union Leader, a New Hampshire newspaper, accusing the Bush administration "of working behind closed doors to weaken our clean air laws and directly threaten New Hampshire." New Hampshire is the first presidential primary state.
