September 18, 2002Broin Companies Awarded DOE Research Grant SCOTLAND (AP) -- Broin Companies of Sioux Falls has won a $5.3 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
"We're very excited about this opportunity to improve the productivity and efficiency of ethanol production worldwide,'' said Jeff Broin, the firm's chief executive officer. "Our companies have worked very hard to become the leader in ethanol technology, and this grant will help us to continue with the improvements we've made to date.''
The company will just about match the grant with its own money for research into new products, Broin said. It's part of an $11.3 million biorefinery pilot project.
Broin was one of six businesses out of 193 to receive a DOE grant. The payments are spread out over four years. Broin Companies will use the money to develop new products created from the dry mill process in ethanol production. The firm plans to use new byproducts from ethanol production to improve plant efficiency.
"We've done the preliminary research at our Sioux Falls facility to test this concept,'' Broin said.
Broin said research related to the grant will take place in Sioux Falls, Scotland, and other locations.
"We will be adding more pilot-scale facilities to our Scotland plant to test the new technologies,'' he said.
The research and development done in Scotland will create several new jobs related to the microbiology and technical work fields.
"That's tremendous for South Dakota leading the way in ethanol development,'' said state Rep. Frank Kloucek, D-Scotland. "Their company has been a real plus for Scotland, our state and the entire nation.
"We need Broin's success as a company and the economic development they offer everyone else.''
Broin Companies has designed and built 13 ethanol plants across the Midwest and has three more under construction.
