September 13, 2002NEVC Awarded Federal Funds Jefferson City, MO – The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to receive a grant in the amount of $958,000 to establish E85 infrastructure and to promote its use. These funds were released as part of the fiscal year 2002 federal appropriation made by Congress to support the use of 85% ethanol as an alternative transportation fuel.
This Congressional allocation of funds to advance E85 efforts was made possible through many supporters of E85 from across the nation and across political boundaries including Senator Dorgan, North Dakota; Senators Nelson and Hagel from Nebraska, and Missouri Senators Bond and Carnahan. All signed letters in support of the 2002 appropriation, which made $2 million available for E85 advancement.
“This grant being provided to the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition to advance E85 fueling sites, promotions, and marketing, represents the largest single award of funds ever made specifically to encourage the use of E85,” stated Gary Marshall, Chairman of the NEVC and CEO of the Missouri Corn Growers Association. “We are extremely grateful to Senator Bond and Senator Dorgan for their assistance in securing these funds and look forward to continuing to work with the Congress to establish a stronger demand for domestic renewable fuels such as E10 and E85.”
An earlier July 2002 announcement was also made by DOE issuing $804,000 to Clean Cities Coalitions across the nation. The intent of these grant funds is to assist with the development of twenty public and private E85 fueling pumps in Dover, Delaware; the Twin Cites of Minnesota; Buffalo, New York; Southeast Wisconsin; Titusville/Kennedy Space Center; Cleveland, Ohio; and Fargo, North Dakota. This money was part of the same appropriation made by the Congress to advance E85 efforts.
The NEVC is again requesting $2 million from the Congress for use during federal fiscal year 2003 that begins October 1, 2002. As was the case last year, the Senate has included the funds in one of the 2003 appropriation bills and is currently considering the approval of the legislation.
