August 5, 2002Updated California Report Finds Ethanol Production Capacity Scheduled to Reach 4.5 Billion Gallons by End of 2005 CEC Survey Reports That Planned Growth Outpaces RFS Requirements
WASHINGTON, DC – According to an updated California Energy Commission (CEC) report, U.S. ethanol production capacity is projected to nearly double to over 4.5 billion gallons per year by the end of 2005. The report indicates production capacity could reach more than 2.8 billion gallons by the end of this year – far more than the 2.3 billion gallon requirement for 2004 under the renewable fuels standard (RFS) passed recently by the U.S. Senate.
“The CEC has once again found that there will be ample ethanol production capacity to meet the modest RFS included in the Senate energy bill,” said Bob Dinneen, Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) president. “Given this clear-cut report by the state of California, there’s no rational justification for anyone to question the ethanol industry’s ability to meet the new demand. The facts are clear.”
The new CEC report updates the previous U.S. Ethanol Industry Production Capacity Outlook released in August of 2001. According to the update, “the U.S. ethanol industry still has plans to roughly double its production capacity over a four-year period, resulting in estimated industry-wide capacity of about 4.5 billion gallons per year by the end of 2005.”
The Senate and House are currently in conference to negotiate the differences between their two energy bills. Under the Senate bill, the RFS would require 2.3 billion gallons of renewable fuel use in 2004, growing to 5 billion gallons by 2012. The RFA fully expects the final bill to include the Senate-passed RFS.
