August 28, 2000Ridge Administration Offers More than $7 Million in Alternative Fuel Grants
Department of Environmental Protection Agency (DEP) Secretary James M. Seif today announced that more than $7 million is available for qualified applicants through the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program.
"Alternative fuels burn much cleaner than conventional gasoline, releasing fewer harmful pollutants into the air and making it easier for us to breathe," Seif said. "Alternative fuels also reduce our reliance on foreign oil and reinforce our commitment to energy security and economic development at home."
Grants can be used to convert an existing gasoline vehicle to operate on an alternative fuel; pay for the difference between an alternative fuel vehicle and a conventional gasoline or diesel vehicle; purchase and install a refueling or recharging facility; or evaluate new alternative fuel technologies.
"Grants awarded this year will cover up to 30 percent of the applicant's eligible costs," Seif said. "Organizations have until Oct. 2 to apply."
Eligible applicants include school districts, local governments, corporations, partnerships, nonprofit entities and Commonwealth residents.
Alternative fuels include compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid propane gas (LPG), ethanol (E85), methanol (M85), hydrogen, hythane, electricity, coal-derived liquid fuels and fuels derived from biological materials.
Studies show that alternative fuels emit no particulate matter, less carbon monoxide and fewer pollutants that contribute to ground-level ozone, or smog, than the conventional fuels in current use. A third of Pennsylvania's ozone comes from gasoline-powered vehicles and refueling operations.
In the last five years, DEP has awarded nearly $17 million to fund 165 projects in 33 counties.
Applications can be requested by contacting Karen DeFrain at P.O. Box 8468, Harrisburg, PA 17105-8468; by emailing defrain.karen@dep.state.pa.us; by calling 717-772-3429; or by faxing 717-772-2303, Attn: AFIG. The application package also may be obtained by visiting DEP through the Pennsylvania website at http://www.state.pa.us or directly at http://www.dep.state.pa.us (directLINK "Alternative Fuels").
