August 15, 2000New ethanol Refueling Station - Cooperative Owned Located near CORN-er Stone Farmers Cooperative, a Lavern, Minnesota ethanol plant, was a vacant convenience store. This empty space is now the newest ethanol refueling station in the state.
Officials of CORN-er Stone Farmers Cooperative saw the potential immediately. CORN-er Stone is the farmer co-op majority partner in Agri-Energy LLC, a corn-to-fuel ethanol company that started production in 1998.
Dave Kolsrud is chairman of its board, which helped organized three other local co-ops to put an offer on the building. The four co-ops put up $235,000 for the property and another $1 million in renovation. The grand opening was last month.
Others in the deal are SWMN Co-op (Southwest Minnesota) and Hills-Beaver Creek Farm Service -- both also investors in the ethanol plant -- and Rock County Co-op Oil, the local Cenex dealer.
"We're trying to integrate things so as farmers we're always doing business with ourselves. The product in these tanks over here is right from our own plant," Kolsrud says.
