Farmers Union Commits $1 Million to Co-op Project

(AP) HURON,S.D. - The South Dakota Farmers Union board of directors has voted to invest $1 million in the Dakota Value Capture Cooperative project in Sully County.

The $64 million closed-loop facility north of Pierre would consist of a 20-million-gallon ethanol plant and a 28,000-head cattle feedlot. They would be connected by a system to capture odor and manure at the feedlot and turn it to methane to be burned at the ethanol plant.

Curt Mortenson, president of Dakota Value Capture Cooperative, said the group has raised more than $15 million in private commitments and $6 million in federal grants. Its goal is to raise $24 million to $28 million by March 15.

Farmers Union President Dennis Wiese said it is the largest single investment made by the organization in a value-added agricultural project.

"This is one project that will revolutionize the way we look at value-added activities in all of rural America," he said.

Wiese said DVCC's ability to finish 65,000 head of cattle annually could help lead to a producer-owned beef processing cooperative in the state.
