October 11, 2001Adkins Energy Commenced Construction on $70 Million Ethanol Plant in Illinois Adkins Energy LLC (Lena, Ill.) recently began construction in September 2001 on a $70 million grassroots ethanol plant in Stephenson County near Lena, Illinois that is expected to start production late 2002. The plant will produce 40 million gallons per year of ethanol using approximately 13 million bushels of corn as a feedstock.
In addition, the plant will produce 108,000 tons per year of dried distillers grain for use as a livestock feed and sell 101,000 tons of carbon dioxide produced as a by product. A simple cycle on-site electrical generation unit will be constructed making the plant an Independent Energy Producer (IEP) generating approximately six mega-watts and supplying 100% of the power needed to run the ethanol plant using natural gas rather than purchasing power from an electric utility.
Lurgi PSI Corporation (Memphis, Tenn.) has been chosen to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the new ethanol plant. The on-site generation unit is currently being constructed by a joint venture between Adkins Energy LLC and NiCor Gas Company.
Adkins Energy LLC was formed by over 241 members made up of farmers and local investors, including Lurgi, PSI Corporation, NiCor Gas Company, Williams Energy, and Pearl City Elevator.
