September 24, 2001China starts building grain alcohol fuel plant BEIJING, Sept 23 - China started building what will be its largest grain alcohol fuel factory last week, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The plant, in the northeastern province of Jilin, would cost 2.89 billion yuan ($349 million) and was expected to produce 600,000 tonnes of alcohol fuel per year from 1.92 million tonnes of corn once it opened in 2003, Xinhua said in an overnight report seen on Sunday.
Apart from alcohol fuel, the project would also be able to produce 45,000 tonnes of corn oil, 175,000 cubic metres of hollow bricks and 183,000 tonnes of materials for road building, it said.
Grain alcohol mixed with petroleum can be used as automobile fuel and burns cleaner than pure gasoline.
Xinhua said Jilin was the country's number one corn producer with annual output of 15.36 million tonnes. The alcohol fuel project would only consume one-eighth of the province's annual corn output and would not affect the grain supply.
