July 17, 2001China Needs Ethanol Production, Cleaner Air for 2008 Olympics Beijing Looks to ‘World Fuel Ethanol Congress’ In Order to Cut Smog Before Olympic Games
As the government of China plans to spend nearly $12 billion on a project to cut smog and pollution in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games, both public and private leaders are forging ahead with plans to build dozens of industrial-scale ethanol plants across key areas of China.
To meet this massive environmental challenge in the next seven years, ethanol industry officials in both U.S. and China have began setting the stage in Beijing for the World Fuel Ethanol Congress (WFEC), Oct. 28-31, 2001. BBI International, a Colorado-based ethanol consulting firm - along with several ethanol industry suppliers and contractors - are anticipating enormous interest in the WFEC.
“The timing (of the International Olympic Committee's decision to give Beijing the 2008 games) is perfect for the ethanol industry and vital to air quality in Beijing,” said BBI International President Mike Bryan. “Both the 2008 Olympic Games -- and the drastic need for clean-burning, renewable fuels in China -- position the WFEC as the most important ethanol meeting in Asia to date.”
Beijing entrepreneurs, along with university and government officials interested in developing renewable fuels, are promoting the WFEC as Asia’s first major ethanol conference. BBI International, in a partnership with Tsinghua University and BioEnergy Technologies, Ltd., of Hong Kong, will hold the WFEC at the Beijing International Conference Centre.
"The World Fuel Ethanol Congress will provide the perfect venue to forge new relationships, explore new markets and exchange the latest information on fuel ethanol production technologies. Asia presents one of the most exciting growth opportunities the ethanol industry has ever seen," Bryan said.
In fact , industry analysts believe China will soon become one of the most important ethanol producing nations in the world because ethanol has great potential to improve the quality of air in China, while cutting the nation’s oil imports and adding value to agriculture commodities.
The China State Development Planning Commission recently declared the launch of a nationwide fuel ethanol program and China now has the Quality Standards for denatured fuel-ethanol and ethanol-blended gasoline for motor vehicles. The annual gasoline consumption in China is 36 million tons (12 billion gallons) and the use of diesel fuel is about three times as much.
This event will bring together key industry experts, government officials and stakeholders from the USA, China, other countries in Asia and around the world. Equipment, technology and service vendors exhibiting in the WFEC will share information on the latest process technologies, equipment, products and services available to the emerging Asian ethanol industry.
