June 15, 2001Archer Daniels mulls additional ethanol expansion Archer Daniels Midland Co., the largest U.S. producer of ethanol, on Thursday said it expects to decide within a month whether it will further expand its ethanol production to meet anticipated demand for the fuel additive, especially in California.

The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday denied California's request to be waived from provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act requiring the use of additives to make gasoline burn more cleanly.
The EPA decision means California will need about 580 million gallons of ethanol for reformulated gasoline (RFG) oxygenates in 2003, industry and state officials said this week.
``We are looking to see exactly what we have to do to increase the corn grind as well as fermentation at this point,'' said ADM spokesman Larry Cunningham in a telephone interview. ``That will be forthcoming within the next month.''
California had previously decided to ban methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), the other choice as a fuel additive, by Dec. 31, 2002. Ethanol and MTBE are oxygenates that make gasoline burn more cleanly and reduce pollution. But in California, MTBE is being phased-out because of concern that it pollutes ground water.
Cunningham said ADM is in the process of completing expansion of ethanol production in Peoria, Ill., which will add 50 million gallons within the next two months.
