February 28, 2001NCGA's President's Award Honors Senator Harkin The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) yesterday recognized Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) for his support and leadership on the issues of ethanol by presenting him with the NCGA President's Award. Harkin is the ranking Democratic member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
Annually, the NCGA honors an individual who has furthered the cause of the nation's corn growers. Previous recipients have been recognized for their legislative support, technological advances or some other achievements in backing corn growers and the corn industry. Lee Klein, NCGA president and a farmer from Battle Creek, Neb., presented the award to Sen. Harkin during the 2001 Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The 2001 Commodity Classic is the sixth annual combined convention and trade show of the NCGA and the American Soybean Association.
In presenting the award Klein said, "Sen. Harkin's efforts in leading the charge against the California oxygen waiver, and his commitment to protect ethanol's market opportunities in California's reformulated gasoline have earned him the thanks and respect of all corn farmers."
