February 5, 2001Genencor Executive Appointed to the United States Biomass R&D; Technical Advisory Committee; Jack Huttner Will Serve as Committee Co-chair Genencor International has announced that Jack Huttner, vice president for corporate communications and public affairs, has been named to the United States Biomass Research and Development Technical Advisory Committee. Huttner was appointed by the Secretary of Energy and the Secretary of Agriculture for three years and will co-chair the committee with Glenn English, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and former congressman from Oklahoma.
The advisory committee, established by the White House and the Biomass Research and Development Act of 2000, is part of a federal-government-wide initiative lead by the Departments of Agriculture and Energy. The committee will assist the federal government in meeting the Act's goals of promoting a cleaner environment and greater energy security by the coordination and encouragement of biobased product research and development. The committee will also provide advice on the focus and direction of program initiatives and on the strategic impact of program activities. This year, the federal budget will devote $230 million to biobased products and bioenergy research and development.
"The creation of this technical advisory committee signals that industrial biotechnology is now key to producing new forms of energy, chemicals and materials," said Carl B. Feldbaum, president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). "Jack Huttner's appointment gives the biotechnology industry a superb opportunity to provide leadership to this critical federal initiative."
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Huttner has been with Genencor International since 1998. Prior to joining the company, he served as the founding executive director of the New York Biotechnology Association, Inc, a statewide industry development organization. He has held a number of volunteer positions including chairman of a coalition of high technology industry groups, the Emerging Industry Alliance of NY State. He is currently the chairman of the industrial and environmental section of BIO in Washington, D.C.
