February 2, 2001USDA selects participants for new bioenergy program With the Bush administration searching for new ways to increase U.S. oil and natural gas supplies, the U.S. Agriculture Department Thursday selected 79 bioenergy plants in 19 states to participate in a $150 million program encouraging production of alternative fuels.
The 2001 bioenergy program, announced last October, makes cash payments to companies that increase purchases of corn, soybeans and other commodities to expand production of ethanol, biodiesel, or other biofuels. U.S. producers can receive subsidies of up to $7.5 million per year, the USDA said.
The USDA chose ethanol and biodiesel plants in Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.
