January 12, 2001Veneman USDA Confirmation Hearing Set Jan 18 The Senate confirmation hearing for U.S. Agriculture Secretary-designate Ann M. Veneman is scheduled for Jan. 18, Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of Iowa, announced.
Veneman, 51, an agricultural trade expert, is expected to win confirmation as the first woman to be agriculture secretary in the 139-year history of the department, the government's fourth- largest as measured by spending.
Veneman will be questioned on President-elect George W. Bush's plans for short- and long-term farm policy, federal bailouts for farmers, agricultural concentration, liberalizing global farm trade, food safety, biotechnology and support for ethanol, among other topics. The current farm law expires next year.
``At the moment there doesn't seem to be any public controversies that would derail things,'' said Andy Fisher, a spokesman for Senator Richard Lugar, Republican of Indiana. A Senate Agriculture Committee vote on Veneman's confirmation will be conducted after Jan. 20, Fisher said.
Harkin is temporary chairman of the committee after Republicans lost four seats in the Nov. 7 election, leaving the 100-member Senate split 50-50 between the two parties.
Republicans will have control after Vice President-elect Richard Cheney is sworn in on Jan. 20, because under the Constitution, the vice president is the president of the Senate and breaks tie votes. Lugar will reclaim his position as head of the Agriculture Committee.
