Taiwan to Examine the Effects of MTBE
Taipei, Taiwan – The Environmental Protection Agency of Taipei will organize an “MTBE Risk Assessment Committee” to evaluate the risks and alternatives for MTBE. This action came after a meeting on December 20th between the EPA, local legislators, researchers, professors, and other government officials to discuss the issue of MTBE in groundwater.
The two primary suppliers of gasoline on the Island of Taiwan are the Chinese Petroleum Corporation and Formosa Petrochemical Corporation. Formosa Petroleum is the latest petroleum marketer, with about 300 retail stations and a new refining operation.
Currently, nearly 100% of the gasoline sold in Taiwan is blended with between 6-7% MTBE, primarily for octane and carbon monoxide reduction reasons. The replacement of MTBE with ethanol would create a market of 100 million gallons annually and 1 million metric tons of corn.
