December 7, 2000US Advance Sales of Corn Down 15% From a Year Ago, USDA Says Advance sales of U.S. corn exports are running behind their pace of a year ago, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.
The total commitments to purchase, a reflection of the future pace of exports, showed corn sales down 15 percent as of Nov. 30 at 18.3 million metric tons in the marketing year that began Sept. 1, compared with 21.6 million a year earlier.
Advance sales of wheat were down 2 percent to 17 million tons from the same period a year ago in a marketing year that began June 1. Soybean sales were up 7 percent to 14.4 million tons, and upland cotton sales were down about 10 percent at 4 million bales.
Shipments of corn were down 8 percent from a year ago, as of Nov. 30. Wheat was down 3.1 percent, and soybeans were up 2.2 percent so far this marketing year from the year-earlier period, according to the USDA's weekly export sales report.
Exports of upland cotton were up 34 percent from the same period a year, USDA figures showed.
Here is a summary of total agricultural export shipments for the current marketing year, compared with export shipments during the same period a year earlier. Advanced sales aren't listed.
Shipment figures represent actual commodities loaded on ships for export overseas or transported by rail or truck to Canada or Mexico.
