November 3, 2000DOE Opens Bioenergy Center in Colorado The Department of Energy (DOE) recently opened a new federal research laboratory at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO. The new National Bioenergy Center will employ 60 NREL scientists and will investigate technology that converts biobased products into fuel.
The scientists will study different ways to produce ethanol for vehicles using agricultural waste such as corn stalks and rice straw. The center will also examine such biobased products as
recyclable paper and fallen timber.
DOE said the opening of the bioenergy center is part of the Clinton administration's effort to "triple the use" of bioenergy products by 2010. The agency also said the center will help reduce the dumping or burning of millions of tons of farm waste.
